Work Package 1 – Eco-Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Seafood Production

  • Demonstrate at both pilot and farm-scale, the efficacy of practical aquafeeds, supplemented with functional blends of macroalgae, microalgae and selenised-yeasts, as tools for the biofortification of Atlantic salmon, common carp and gilthead seabream fillets with health-promoting nutrients, such as iodine, selenium, iron and n-3 PUFAs.
  • Identify and demonstrate the benefits of integrated seaweed production for fish compared to monoculture in terms of water quality, fish health/welfare/production and seaweed production.
  • Develop two processes to improve management of microbiological (norovirus; E. coli) and harmful algal bloom (HAB) risks in shellfish production areas and thus enhance the quality and safety of shellfish products.
  • Develop three improved fast screening methods for xenobiotics, tetrodotoxins (TTXs) and multiple regulated marine toxins.

Work Package 3 – Benefit-To-Risk Assessment of Solutions

  • Validate through chemical/biological analyses, laboratory assays and predictive modelling the claims and impacts on human health, nutrition and safety of the sustainable production and processing eco-innovative solutions developed in WPs 1 and 2.
  • Evaluate the impact of solutions, both in terms of nutritional quality and food safety, by investigating biological and/or chemical contaminants. WP3 avails of a technological platform which investigates:
    1. Validated methods to detect relevant agents (e.g. nutrients, toxicological, biological hazards).
    2. Proof of concept-based methods to detect biological activities (e.g. in vitro bio accessibility).
    3. Database integrating WP3 results, as well as other parameters relevant for labelling from WP4 and WP5.
    4. Models and scenario analysis to assess and quantify the exposure, benefits and risks (e.g. shelf-life) for human health that are foreseen for each eco-innovative solution.

Work Package 4 – Market, Acceptability, Sustainability and Demonstration

  • Assess consumer acceptance of the eco-innovative seafood solutions and products through surveys.
  • Assess consumer acceptability through experimental auction combined with sensory tasting.
  • Assess market opportunities for the new seafood products, techniques and/or processes for sustainable production of safe and high-quality seafood.
  • Assess the economic feasibility of the new products, techniques and processes and deliver business plans.
  • Evaluate the environmental impact and sustainability of solutions for seafood production and processing.
  • Demonstrate technical viability of processes, performance of the new prototypes of fast screening methods in different operating conditions, and the applicability of these new tools to stakeholders.

Work Package 5 – Seafood Authentication, Traceability, Labelling and Certification

  • Set up an up-to-date reference database for species authenticity that allows unequivocal identification of species on the European market.
  • Set up a methodology for quantification of mixed samples and advanced fast method.
  • Develop and test a digital traceability system for integrity parameters (authenticity, food quality parameters/content) of fish and/or aquaculture products produced under WP1 and WP2, coupled with QR codes that enable consumers to obtain instantaneous information when purchasing the product.
  • Provide a benchmark tool for product quality labelling.
  • Review and test certification scheme(s) for product quality labelling and its practical implementation.

Work Package 6 – Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation

  • Implement the SEAFOODTOMORROW Dissemination, innovation, exploitation and data management plan (DEP).
  • Facilitate communication and dissemination for widespread awareness of the project amongst stakeholders.
  • Ensure that all Knowledge Outputs arising from SEAFOODTOMORROW are captured and appropriately transferred and exploited by integrating Knowledge Management (KM) systems into the project design.
  • Improve the professional skills and competences of those working or being trained to work within the seafood industry through the development of an e-learning module.
  • Support consumers in making informed decisions about seafood intake by developing a consumer benefit-risk communication tool, taking into account both personal benefits and risks.

Work Package 7 – Project Management

  • Guarantee from the beginning of the project the full involvement of all partners to ensure that the contract is executed in a timely and efficient manner and that the project objectives are met.
  • Ensure that the work and tasks are completed on time and to a high quality.
  • Monitor the expenses and allocation of the budget, ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, and make necessary adjustments to the implementation of the project, including potential deviations.
  • Ensure that reporting is done on a periodic basis, in the most efficient and pragmatic way, according to EC guidelines to provide all important and high-impact information that may influence the outcome of the project.
  • Ensure full cooperation between innovation institutions, SMEs, IAGs and the EC to enable optimal SEAFOODTOMORROW
  • Activate and maintain a communication framework, appropriate knowledge management, and fulfilment of responsibilities towards the EC and consortium commitments.
  • Manage the dissemination of results.
  • Ensure that gender equality and ethics issues are adequately addressed.
